photographing a MEDIEVAL inspired book launch photoshoot in the cotswolds
Getting the brief
This is a client I've worked with once before for her branding photoshoot last year in Birmingham. However, this Brief message started, 'I have a new novel coming out and if it's not too weird..' Instantly interested to read on!
Dr Rachel Grosevenor
If you are not yet accustomed to Rachel Grosvenor's work, get to know. She is just fantastic.
This photoshoot was for her third novel; Witchborne, which had an incredibly successful publication launch 1st September 2025.
With Rachel living around 4 hours from myself in Kent, and wanting some special guests to be involved in the photoshoot, Rachel decided to go somewhere in between our two locations.
Photoshoot Location Scouting
With initial inspiration images shared, I set about looking for somewhere appropriate for us to photograph. Somewhere suitable for the aesthetic, between us, not too dependant on weather, not too busy with the public and somewhere that didn't have any photographic restrictions (some places do, always best to check!).
I decided to look more closely at the Cotswolds - beautiful outdoor scenery in abundance. I checked maps, reviews, walking route apps and public photos and stumbled across Sapperton Valley circular walk in Gloucestershire. It seemed to hit the brief perfectly, had some gorgeous historic building and a very special feature within the woods which would work perfectly for the medieval theme.
The area was stunning - a short, but somewhat challenging walk from where we parked down in the woods which housed this beautiful bridge right by the entrance, we set up camp there. We started with a few shots of Rachel not in costume first of all and then had all three attendees dressing and posing for photos playing parts in the novel.
and the results...
Delivering the gallery and reflecting.
I loved editing this gallery. I actually love editing all my galleries, I love seeing photos and/ or videos come together to create a narrative. I sent over the gallery to Rachel and her response was 'Wow, you work fast! And also, I love these. They're so beautiful.' and a fantastic five star Google review. I adore working with repeat clients and absolutely never take it for granted, I'm also incredibly grateful that both times Rachel has booked me to photograph her, it has been in spite of the large amount of travel. I feel so honoured to be trusted and chosen to capture such incredible business owners.
If you're looking to book a promotional photo or video shoot or just capture your brand story; I'd love to chat.
